Film Photography

Rolleiflex 2.8e

Very Mindful. Very Intentional.

In July 2024, after years of taking hundreds of thousands of iPhone photos I did hardly anything with, I switched back to film photography.

I dusted off my Yeh Yeh’s (grandpa) 1956 Rolleiflex 2.8E and bought a roll of film. Each roll only takes 12 photos, so I’ve learned to be very mindful in my approach. This camera allows me to capture people’s souls. There’s something magical and sacred about film photography. I hope you can feel it, too.

Since I am suffering from many illnesses, it’s challenging for me to be at social events. I can hide behind my cameras when my anxiety comes knocking or when inspiration whisks me away to get that shot. What I didn’t expect was how many people would come to talk to me about the camera and share their stories from their childhood.

It’s become a way for me to connect with others in a deep and meaningful way.

Fun photo facts:

  • I used to play Sears Portrait Studio as a kid with my brother and cousins as my subjects, propping them up on boxes covered with blankets on top of a table. There was no camera.

  • My second job was working in a photography studio. My favorite part was being sent out as a second shooter.

  • My ancestors were professional photographers with their own studio in the Philippines.
